Conversations with Calvin: We the Species – Featuring Robert Collin
Live from Frederick, Maryland, we meet Robert Collin—a man of many degrees, passions, and profound purpose. With academic credentials that span a BS, JD, MSW, MSUP, and LIM, Robert serves as an Associate Professor at the University of Oregon’s Environmental Studies program. His latest work, “The Climate Adaptation Generation: A Blueprint for the Future,” was recently honored as the best climate change book in the U.S. for 2025, marking another milestone in a remarkable career dedicated to environmental awareness and action.
Robert Collin isn’t just an academic; he’s a connector of people and ideas. His journey
is one of resilience, curiosity, and purpose—intertwining themes of climate, adaptation, law, and even basketball.
As he puts it, “Leave it to the universe.” His belief in connectivity and commonality shines
through both his personal and professional pursuits.
In this #realconversation,
hosted by Calvin from NJ Discover (New
Jersey), the two connected over a casual social media exchange that
evolved into a three-hour conversation filled with insight, laughter, and
shared values. What began as a brief introduction quickly turned into a deep
dialogue about the pressing need for climate
adaptation, the importance of community
engagement, and the role of education in driving sustainable change.
Robert’s work transcends academia. He has
contributed to law reviews, environmental
encyclopedias, and advisory
commissions, helping shape critical discussions around climate change, drought, earthquakes, floods,
and the broader concept of adaptation.
His holistic approach merges legal, social, and environmental perspectives,
offering a blueprint for how humanity can flourish in the face of ecological
challenges.
Both Robert and Calvin share a connection
through Rick Della Ratta’s Jazz for Peace,
working on projects that reach out to Elders—bridging generations through
creativity and compassion.
This conversation reminds us that purpose and passion often intersect unexpectedly,
whether through music, basketball, or climate activism. As Calvin notes, “Bob
illuminates and inspires.” Indeed, he does—inviting us all to listen, learn,
and take action for the planet we share.
